The Magnificent Ruins
This is one of the most popular instagram worthy backgrounds for travellers due to its magnificent architecture. It is known as the “Taj Mahal of Negros” because the once splendid mansion was devotedly built by Don Mariano Ledesma Lacson in memory of his beloved wife, Maria Braga, who died after an accidental bathroom slip while pregnant with their 11th child. To express his undying love for his wife, the initials of their names were molded on every pillar denoted by two M’s which stands for Mariano and Maria.
During WWII, the mansion was intentionally burned down by Filipino guerillas who are working under the US Armed Forces to stop the Japanese from using it as a military office. What survives of the structure has been turned into a tourist site and managed by the direct descendants of Mariano and Maria Braga – Lacson.
The surrounding place was developed into a garden of ornamental plants and flowers with a vast area of green grass, elevated stone patio, gazebos and manmade lake which is perfect for prenup photoshoots and other events. Not only did it become a memorial to love but it also became a tourist spot, a city landmark and one of the best location for photo backdrops.
The best time to visit the place is late afternoon to experience the sun set and turning on of lights which gives a different effect to the whole place. Be sure to bring extra cash if you want to dine or have refreshments in the cafe/restaurant inside the place that serves Ilonggo – Spanish menus. Also take note that outside food, bringing of pets and drones are not allowed inside the vicinity of the place.
