Buy native delicacies for your pasalubong

Going to a new place or city not only inspires us to visit the popular tourist spots but also encourages us to try out the delicacies and food of the locals for a more holistic experience. If you want to look for local delicacies or popular “kakanins” in Negros Occidental, be sure to visit these place/shops to complete your “lagaw” experience or find something for your pasalubong.

1. Quan Delicacies

Quan is famous for their native delicacies and has become an institution in the city of Bacolod. The owners started with a single delicacy, the soft and tasty rice puto, and has grown into a wider menu of kakanins (native delicacies) and local food like the Dinuguan which is a flavorful stew of pork and chicken meat simmered in a rich, spicy dark gravy of pig blood, garlic, chili and vinegar.

Their tagline, “A family of food for the family” speaks of the culture of home made native foods made for the palate of the locals.

2. El Ideal Bakery

El Ideal, more than a bakery and a restaurant, has also been considered a landmark and a heritage site in Silay. Their store has been in existence for a century now and they are located in the exact same spot eversince with the original facade of the old house as part of their feature design.

El Ideal started in the 1920’s and was owned by the patriarch Cesar Locsin. It is said that he pursued his love for baking during the First World War by making bread for the locals. He sold his products in the same exact house where their present store is currently located. His legacy in baking was passed on to his children and his youngest daughter Alice established the foundations of El Ideal that is known today.

Through the years they have expanded their product and introduced new favorites among the locals and tourists alike and their famous guapple (guava and apple) pie. They also serve dishes for breakfast and lunch and feature other local products in their shop. They still continue to make their pastries using their own family recipe and the store has become a popular one-stop pasalubong shop for those who travel in Negros Occidental.

3. Roli's cafe

Location: Roli’s Cafe, Roli’s Arcade, La Salle Ave, Bacolod, 6100 Negros Occidental

The shop was established in the 1940’s and was previously known as Roli’s Diner. They were famous for their Napoleones but also serve a variety of local menus. The location of the diner is very accessible and the place provides a homey and nostalgic atmosphere for its interior design. It is a favorite among University students in the neighborhood and the food connoisseur for their classic menu with a touch of home.

4. Silay Public Market

Location: Burgos Street, Silay City, Negros Occidental.

Opens: Daily

Best time to buy: Morning

Support the locals by buying their homemade products at the Silay City Public Market. You will find kakanin vendors in every corner of the public market and they are available daily but mostly in the morning hours. 

They also have a place inside the market building where they have tables for each vendor displaying their products of kakanins and all kinds of food for merienda or pamahaw.
